About us

The Jackson Council on the Aging is a non-profit organization designed to meet the needs of the elderly of Jackson Parish. It is our goal to assist them in retaining the level of independence they desire, and implementing programs to address their needs.

The Jackson Parish Council on the Aging became a chartered organization in 1969. It operates under a volunteer board of directors and at present has thirteen employees providing services throughout the parish. Funds are received from state and federal grants to provide a variety of services to those 60 years of age or older.

Senior Adults need to form meaningful relationships, to develop social belongingness and to experience a positive self-worth. The Senior Center provides a central location where basic community resources are available. The Senior Center in Jonesboro is open five days a week.

Advocacy

Action on behalf of older persons to secure needed services and benefits.

Education & Training

Providing formal or informal opportunities for individuals to aquire knowledge, experience or skills.

Health Screening

A variety of health screening services are available. Some of these services are blood pressure check, hearing and eye tests.

Homemaker

Household chores such as sweeping, laundry, vacuuming, and general housework are provided to the elderly who are physically unable to do these things. We accept donations for this service.

Information & Referral

Services which seek to match a wide variety of individual needs with appropriate community resources through advice, counseling, referral and follow up.

Services

Offered

Meals - Congregate

Hot, well blanced meals are served to participants Monday through Friday at the Congregate Meal sites in Jonesboro and Chatham. A contriution to the meat program is requested.

Meals - Home Delivered

Limited Meals are delivered to homebound elderly Monday through Friday. Sack lunches are provided for holidays. Contribution to the meal program is requested.

Nutrition Screening

Action on behalf of older persons to secure needed services and benefits.

Recreation

The enabling of older persons to use and more fully enjoy free time, including individual and group social activities and leisure pursuits such as arts, crafts, hobbies, trips, games and physical activities, etc.

Shopping

Transportation

Local transportation is provided to medical facilities, social service agencies, meal sites and to pay bills and shopping. Monday through Thursday, this service is provided for those who have no means of transportationor have become unable to drive their private vehicles.

Elderly Protective Services

The Governer’s Office of Elderly Affairs is responsible for the provision of eldery protection services to persons 60 years or older. These services include prompt investigation and assessment.

As an agency under the auspices of GOEA, the Jackson Council on Aging has entered into an interagency agreement with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Department to provide these services.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ELDERLY PROTECT SERVICES:

  • Age 60 and older
  • Alleged to be abused or neglected, financially exploited by caregivers or others who have assumed this responsibility or unable to provide for his or her own well-being, which results in damage to health and safety.
  • Unable to protect himself from abuse, neglect or financial expoitation
  • Unable to carry out daily activities because of age, physical or mental disability.

Louisiana Law States that ALL citizens who have cause to believe that an elderly person is being neglected or abused shall report the case.
